Summary: “Fake News” media exist in both Hong Kong and USA, the main difference being that in HK, many “fake news” media are controlled by Beijing, while in America, they are usually directed by “left-wing” business tycoons and politicians with ulterior motives.  In Hong Kong, pro-commie fake news reporters who carry out spying activities against journalists’ professional ethics, or even act as a henchman for Beijing, are often defended by the Hong Kong Journalists’ Association, which warns scandalized citizens, whose privacy has been encroached upon by those pro-commie reporters, against obstructing their “normal reporting job.” E.g., on the evening of Feb 8, a self-proclaimed “editor” of a pro-CCP facebook page, Hong Kong Good News, was caught concealing her “reporter’s identity” and secretly taking photos of the audience of a dissidents’ assembly at HK University commemorating the 3rd Anniversary of the Mongkok Police-civilian Clash. Similarly, in America, the Feb 11 incident of a BBC cameraman by a drunken man wearing a “#MakeAmericaGreatAgain” hat has been seized upon by mainstream media to blame President #DonaldTrump for inciting violence against media, on the ground that he often calls mainstream media “#fakenews.” But Trump does not call those media fake news for no good reason. A case in point is that in Dec last year, MSNBC embedded in a report on the death of a 7-year-old illegal immigrant #JakelinCaalMaquin in the custody of US border control, a video from the era of Obama showing a soldier pouring away drinking water, to insinuate that US border guards, following Trump’s order, deliberately dehydrated teen refugees to death.

Hongkongers are Told to Respect Fake News Reporters

On Feb 8, the Student Unions of 3 #HongKong universities, together with 3 pro-#HongKongIndependence groups, held an assembly at the HK University in commemoration of the 3rd Anniversary of the 2016 #LunarNewYear Mongkok Police-civilian Clash, which has led to the imprisonment of 31 HK dissidents. “Editor” Kitty Lau from a pro-China-commie facebook page called Hong Kong Good News was caught furtively taking photos and videos of the audience in a non-reporters’ area and without disclosing her reporter’s identity. She was quickly surrounded by a group offended citizens who accused her of being a commie-spy, but no one physically assaulted (as far as the reporter of Local Press could see). Finally, she had to leave under the escort of HKU security guards. Subsequently, Kitty Lau alleged in a video posted on Hong Kong Good News’ fb pg that the dissidents suppressed press freedom. On 13 Feb, the #HongKongJournalistsAssociation (HKJA) published a statement, which asserted that the HKJA was concerned with the incident. Stressing that reporters’ normal reporting work should not be obstructed, it called upon the public to respect journalists’ right to cover news.

Just a Facebook Page, NOT even a Net Media

Former HK lawmaker #NathanLaw argues on his facebook page that HK Good News is not even a net media. It is just a facebook page reposting links of other media, and it regularly directly posts activities news of pro-CommunistChina HK political parties.

#CommissionOfWeirdYouth remarks that during the 2014 #UmbrellaRevolution, numerous net media reporters were brutally treated by the HK Police but the HKJA simply looked the other way. Now, the HKJA regards a facebook page, which is a henchman of the Chinese Communist Party, as a formal media; and a Kitty Lau, who has been bad-mouthing HK dissidents on social media and who gathered intelligence on the participants of the assembly by filming their faces, as a reporter “doing her normal reporting job.”

HK Fake News Reporter Beating up a HK Dissident

Another instance. In August 2016, Edward Leung Tin-kei, spokesman of localist political party, Hong Kong Indigenous, was tailed after and assaulted in a metro station by a reporter of Takungpao, a HK newspaper directly controlled by Beijing. The HKJA then issued a statement saying that swearing at and/or assaulting any reporter is unacceptable, and that taking on the target would not help a reporting task. All in all, the HKJA did not directly condemn the Takungpao reporter for pestering and assaulting a political dissident.

HK Fake News Reporter Tailing after an American Scholar

Yet another example. Australia-based American academic Dr. #KevinCarrico, who has researched Hong Kong nationality, was closely followed by Wen Wei Po, a HK media directly controlled by Communist China, during his short-term visit to HK in December 2018. His chatting with Dr. Chapman Chen, founder of Local Press, on Hong Kong culture and human rights situation in general, in a restaurant was eavesdropped and secretly photographed by staff of Wen Wei Po, which then posted the story on their front page on 17 Dec 2018 with the title, “Australian ‘Independence” Man Teaching “Independence” Sutra”.

BBC, etc. Blame President Trump for Inciting Violence

On the American side, a #BBC cameraman was shoved by a man wearing a red Make America Great Again hat as he filmed a rally held by President Donald Trump in El Paso, Texas, on Feb 11. The assaulter was seen cursing in the direction of the news crews as he was dragged away by another man in a red cap. A Trump campaign official suggested the attacker was drunk. Immediately afterwards, mainstream media like BBC, Washington Post, and Independent co.uk blamed President Donald Trump for inciting violence against journalists, on the ground that the President often called media like CNN, BBC, MSNBC “fake news” and “enemy of the people” and for failing to condemn the assaulter. In reality, shortly after the incident, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders released a statement that said Trump “condemns all acts of violence against any individual or group of people — including members of the press.”

Any Reason to Call them Fake News?

As a matter of fact, President Trump has good reason to call certain “left-wing” mainstream fake news.

Video Embedment to Frame up Trump

In December 2018, the death of a 7-year-old illegal immigrant, Guatemalan girl Jakelin Caal Maquin, in the custody of US border control was seized upon by mainstream media, like CNN, Washington Post, MSNBC, Wall Street Journal, as evidence against the Trump Administration’s policy of saying no to illegal immigrants. They alleged that the girl was dehydrated to death due to Trump’s border policy, but the fact remains that she died of Septic shock and her father had no complaint. MSNBC went so far as to embed in their report of the incident a video from the era of Obama, showing a soldier pouring a bottle of water onto the sandy ground, thereby implying that the border guards under Trump would rather pour away water than give it to a kid-“refugee” dying of thirst.

The #CNN Reporter who Held Fast onto the White House Mic

Another instance. In November 2018, in a White House Q&A session, CNN correspondent #JimAcosta, instead of asking President Trump a real question, accused him of demonising the caravan of migrants heading from Latin America to the southern US border. When Trump said “It’s enough,” Acosta held fast onto the microphone and continued to lash out at the president, whilst pressing down the arm of a female White House aide who tried to take back the microphone from him. He had regularly treated the White House Press Secretary #SarahSanders like this before.
