Hong Kong veteran lyricist #CalvinPoon Yuen-leung, together with his band, is holding a secondary-creation #HongKong #Cantonese pop concert called CantoNightmare at Shouson Theatre, HK Art Centre (Feb 15-Feb17). The objective appears to be satirizing vices and follies in contemporary HK society, e.g. disqualification of democratically elected lawmakers, influx of uncalled-for migrants from China, white elephant projects; and upholding HK Cantonese, which is endangered by the HK authorities’ encouraging local schools to adopt Putonghua in place of HK Cantonese as the medium of instruction. The strategy is to re-create, re-write and re-arrange in Cantonese famous pop songs of HK & other countries like America, China. E.g. “The Fragrance of Durian”(1959), the HK Cantonese theme song of a HK Cantonese movie of the same name, starring Patricia Lam Fung, is rewritten as follows:

District election is coming again and people’ll fight.

Where’s the promised universal suffrage?

Lawmakers blatantly doze off during meetings [e.g. pro-Beijing Wong Ting-kwong].

How may disqualification after being elected be avoided? [Between 2016 and 2017, six democratically elected lawmakers were disqualified because of their political demonstrations during oath-taking.]

Pan-democrats again declare emergency [HK pan-democracy lawmakers often fail to show up when it’s time to vote in the Legco. E.g., Alvin Yeung of the Civic Party, failed to show up at the legislature for a motion on one-way permits for mainland Chinese people that he himself had proposed.]

Gotta give them a vote in tears!

Suddenly the pro-establishment camp claim urgency, too. What on earth is so urgent?

By-elections following elections, what do they want?

Universal suffrage may not come even by 2047!

Is Material Girl Spicy?

Calvin Poon is also a poet, screenwriter, and football commentator. The concert’s Chinese title潘源良生炒廣東話之有辣有唔辣 literally means The Spicy and the Non-spicy — Calvin Poon’s Frying Cantonese. The spicy refers to the ridiculing of problems in contemporary HongKong politics and society. The spicy refers to contemplations on life and literature.  Correspondingly, in the concert’s theme song “Made in Hong Kong”, the “Living in a Material World” in Madonna’s “Material Girl” actually becomes “Tonite, tonite, will become explosively spicy”.

White Elephants

Another example. Hongding Love Song (康定情歌) , a 1940s Sichuan folk song (itself derived from a Tibetan folk song in that area) is re-written as “White Elephants are afraid of auditing, cost-overruns are deemed OK, spending is so easy, each project costing billions,” alluding to the HK Government’s spending billions of public money on non-cost-effective and unnecessary projects like Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge and Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link. A Lantau Tomorrow Vision of the Chief Executive Carrie Lam which involves massive reclamation in the eastern waters off Lantau Island is also on the way.

Moreover, #CherryPinkAndAppleBlossom White is rewritten to ridicule former Chief Executive #CYLeung for possessing supernatural power strong enough to resolve any scandals.
