(Eng. summary below)
On the evening of 21 September 2018, 2047HK Monitor held a forum on The Great Time of HK, hosted by Edward Chin, Country Head at Man Investments. The speakers include pro-HK independence activist, Paladin Cheng; former Secretary for the Civil Service of the HK Govt., Joseph Wong Wing-ping; Bowie Lam, EO of Teen’s Key; Chair of HK Journalists Association, Chris Yeung,
Executive Summary:
Paladin Cheng : We expect China to collapse. We do not believe China people. There are 80 million communists in China, and each communist has at least 5 dependents. So there are at least 0.4 billion China people whose interests are tied up with the CCP. I have worked in China and experienced the differences in values between them and us. National self-determination is never a sin. No one likes fascism. It is natural to want to break away from Communism. Building a democratic China means asking the CCP to give up the entire country. Whereas we just want The CCP to leave HK alone. Building a democratic China must be much more difficult than making HK independent.
Joseph Wong Wing-ping: The West Kowloon Express Rail Link is like a dagger stuck into the heart of HK, for West Kowloon IS the center of HK. Hongkongers are too weak to resist the establishment of the rail. But Hongkongers may struggle for practical arrangements like the establishment of a representative HK office in the rented area of the express rail to speak out for the interests of Hongkongers.
Bowie Lam: Only 10 percent of sex workers in HK are real locals. Most part-time girl-friends are locals. We advocate business registration, with labor insurance and fire safety, etc. Advantages of decriminalization of sex workers include monitor of age and identity card, more protection, less discrimination, lesser control by gangsters.
Chin: Edward Chin: In 1951, a Tibet-China Agreement was signed, to the effect that China would respect the autonomy of Tibet. In 1959, China entered Tibet and killed more than 1 million Tibetans within a couple of years.
Chris Yeung : The freedom of speech space and diversity is disappearing from mainstream media. There are articles which mainstream media won’t publish, that only net media would publish. Don’t know whether even this small garden will disappear in a few years’ time. China’ s office in HK is always watching local media. There may be fake news, fake pictures or omission of information in net media and even in mainstream media. But I don’t believe this cannot be resolved. The readers have to pay attention and read closely. Don’t be too credulous.

Paladin Cheng (Head of a HK Independence Group) : We wait eagerly China to collapse. All families of high ranking officials in China including President Xi Zinping have got Western passports. I support HK independence. because even Carrie Lam and CY Leung do not believe Chinamen. We do not believe China people. There 80 million communists in China, and each communist has at least 5 dependents. So there are at least 0.4 billion China people whose interests are tied up with the CCP. The CCP is Chinamen, that is our conclusion. I have worked in China and experienced the differences in values between them and us. Communist China is maintained by Chinamen. Even when CCP collapses, Chinamen will not suddenly become better. HK has its own WTO position, currency, law, language, etc. HK is very close to independence. If we have the power of diplomacy and direct election and our own army , we are independent.
At this stage, we are not pro military revolution for our force is too small. We just raise our flag in our rally. We are unarmed. We cannot resist the police. On the other hand, even Prof. Benny Tai is now not against HK Indep. And the pro-China lawyer Chan Yung recently proposed HKers to reunite with their mainland family in the Greater Bay Area. And the pro-China lawmaker Miss Kot recently supports setting up desalting plants in HK. If China militarily attacks HK, it will ruin the financial system of HK and attracts foreign interference. So China may not take this step. I believe in the body and the soil are one. National self-determination is never a sin. There are people who won’t accept money in exchange for their dignity. HK Independence, when realized, would be a miracle. Paladin Cheng, when arrested, would be a silly man. Don’t ask whether it is feasible, but whether it should be done. No one likes fascism. It is natural to want to break away from Communism. Building a democratic China means asking the CCP to give up the entire country. Whereas we just want The CCP to leave HK alone. Building a democratic China must be much more difficult than making HK independent. We just want to leave CCP rule. We do not want to overthrow the CCP.
Pastor Fung Chi-wut: I pray for many people, including even President Xi. I do not curse him.
Chin: Edward Chin: In 1951, a Tibet-China Agreement was signed, to the effect that China would respect the autonomy of Tibet. In 1959, China entered Tibet and killed more than 1 million Tibetans within a couple of years. From C.H. Tung to C Y Leung and Carrie Lam, the situation has gone from bad to worse. And the communication between the govt. and the pan-democrats has been decreasing. Many Hongkongers have emigrated. President Xi has deviated from Teng Xiaoping’s policy of autonomy for HK. I support Tibet but I do not support HK Independence because I don’t think it is feasible.
Joseph Wong Wing-ping : The West Kowloon Express Rail Link is like a dagger stuck into the heart of HK, for West Kowloon IS the center of HK. Judicial review is hopeless. The symbolic significance is that the Central Govt. has complete power of rule over HK. Hongkongers are too weak to resist the establishment of the rail. But Hongkongers may struggle for practical arrangements like the establishment of a representative HK office in the rented area of the express rail to speak out for the interests of Hongkongers. Pro-democracy politicians should work at that. One country two systems depends on whether HK can continue to be useful to China. Before Chairman Mao beat the KMT, he had made a deal with the UK that China would not touch the colonial rule of HK. In 1967, China was in chaos. Chairman Mao even set fire to UK embassy. But Mao insisted that China do not get back HK. During the Korean War, China got a lot of supplies from HK. In the reform and opening up of China, HKers were the first investors. Now with the attacks on China by Donald Trump, China needs HK even more. HKers have to speak out even if it is not much use. We have to do our duties and work on things practical until China changes for some reason.
The co-location arrangement of course contravenes Sino British Joint Declaration. But the UK won’t speak out because this is a political issue, and China is a huge market for the UK. China’s diplomat Wang YI reprimanded Jeremy Hunt when he spoke out just slightly for HK during his recent visit to Beijing.
Ms Bowie Lam, EO of Teen’s Key, an NGO: I have been working for the benefit of young sex workers, part-time girl friends. Sex workers cannot pay tax even if they want to. 100 thousand sex workers is a 2014 govt. figure. Very difficult to estimate because of the great fluidity. Traditional type: One prostitute for one brothel, plus club girls. Now more freelancers, like those on social media. Only 10 percent of sex workers in HK are real locals. Most part-time girl-friends are locals. The others are illegal immigrants from China or new immigrants from China and some women of other nationalities. There is also another NGO known as Midnight Blue serving male and/or transgender sex workers. We believe that sex work should be decriminalized. Tis difficult to demarcate a red light zone in HK, a place too small. 60-year-olds and 18 year-olds in the same district? We advocate business registration, with labor insurance and fire safety, etc. Advantages of decriminalization of sex workers include monitor of age and identity card, more protection, less discrimination, lesser control by gangsters.

Chris Yeung (Chair of HK Journalists’ Association and chief writer of CitizensNews): CY leung was against net media, feeling that net media were against him. Carrie Lam is clever enough to have given net media some sort of status. Net media are in general more confrontational. The space of mainstream media is contracting. Net media can do things which mainstream media won’t do. The freedom of speech space and diversity is disappearing from mainstream media. There are articles which mainstream media won’t publish, that only net media would publish. Don’t know whether even this small garden will disappear in a few years’ time. China’ s office in HK is always watching local media. In terms of important topics like HK independence and US-China Trade War, SCMP’s view is very much in alignment with Beijing’s. Otherwise, they are not always in line with Beijing’s stance. Journalists are not asking for good relations with the govt. and not asking for money from the establishment. But when you are close to the power, you may feel thrilled. Young journalists therefore may distrust their boss. The risks faced by HK journalists in China are always great, esp. under President Xi, esp. when you in touch in sensitive issues, like unlimited wealth and corruption of China officials. In the name of national security, there are a lot of forbidden zones, maybe even in HK. Causeway Bookstore is a case in point. We support FCC’s way of handling Chan Ho-tin, Chair of HK National Party. We may not support his stance but we believe he is entitled to a platform to speak about his stance. But even some HKers do not think so. Now everyday, every person with a mobile phone can be a poster/publisher. There may be fake news, fake pictures or omission of information in net media and even in mainstream media. But I don’t believe this cannot be resolved. The readers have to pay attention and read closely. Don’t be too credulous.
