Li Hui, a HKU associate professor in education, originally from Communist China, said in a RTHK program on May 8 that the current situation of Hong Kong students writing traditional Chinese characters was very dissatisfying, that in order to lessen their learning burden, they should write Communist China simplified Chinese characters instead. This followed the recent discovery that the HK Education Bureau has posted on its website an article by a China scholar arguing that Hongkongers’ mother tongue is Putonghua rather than HK Cantonese. Many Hongkongers regard these statements as China’s attempts to re-colonize Hong Kong.
Han characters initially evolved from complicated oracle bone script to simpler seal script, and then to even simpler clerical script and regular script. Nonetheless, when the Han writing system matured in the Han Dynasty, it gradually became more sophisticated again pictographically, because advancements in the everyday life and social structure of the Han people made it necessary to create add radicals to old characters, in order to represent new meanings. All the evolvements above took place among the folk naturally.

The greatest problem with simplified Chinese characters as a writing system and Putonghua as a spoken language is that they were manufactured by the Chinese Communist Party irrespective of external circumstances, and then compulsorily imposed on all China people. Other serious problems with simplified Chinese characters include damaging the user’s mind, e.g., by depriving the character love of its heart (愛->爱), by depriving the character factory of all its contents (廠->厂); promoting homonyms, thereby covertly converting the Han written language from a pictographic writing system into a phonetic one; illogicality (same simplified pictographic components replacing different original pictographic components) and ambiguity (many characters, after simplification, look virtually the same).

Language expresses and constructs identity (Bucholtz & Hall, 2005:35; David Evans, 2014). HK Cantonese and traditional Chinese characters represent the identity of Hongkongers. In the process of colonization, the colonizer often imposes their language on the colonized (Mohammad Khosravi Shakib 2011). Hong Kong is the last stronghold of the Cantonese language; Hong Kong and Taiwan are the last fortresses of traditional Chinese characters. HK Cantonese and traditional Chinese must be defended vigorously.

李輝以香港小朋友寫字作例,「功課太多,因為繁體字筆劃太多,所以幼稚園開始,四歲就開始操練寫中文字,寫得好辛苦,日日功課做兩個鐘,好多幼稚園都有」。問到是否寫簡體字較好,李輝道:「從我觀點,識繁寫簡。」

漢字演變初由繁變簡,後再由簡變繁。始於商朝甲骨文複雜象形文字,後簡化為篆書,再簡化為隸書階書。漢時定型後,由於社會結構,生活方式日益多元進化,故漢字如有修正,多為加筆,以資辨義,例如:採的本字係采,《康熙字典•釆部•釆部》采:《唐韻》倉宰切《集韻》《韻會》此宰切,音採。《說文》捋取也。又擇也。又采色。又物采。又飾也。又風采。後來,為分別風采與采色及采擇,遂加筆造新字「彩」及「採」,中共殘體字卻將漢字「彩」及「採」,變返做「采」,此誠文化倒退!

又如原本無雲字,只有云字。為分辨云曰之云與山川氣之云,而加雨作雲。《說文》山川氣也。象回轉形。後人加雨作雲,而以云爲云曰之云。中共殘體字卻將雲退化為云。

至於民間漢字簡化,香港例子有鬭變鬥、竃變灶等,都係用家自發,汰弱留強,十分民主的。(參陳雲《中文解毒》)

殘體字令人心靈殘缺(對照陳雲《中文解毒》),例如愛無心、親不見、 廠空空、產不生等,直教用者「闔家剷」。

殘體字化形音義合一的漢字為拼音文字,例如干幹榦乾本為四個不同的字,各有自己意義,殘體字就全化為一字,即「干」。查干,《說文》犯也。幹:《康熙字典•干部•十》《類篇》幹,能事也。又《玉篇》幹,體也。《易•乾卦》貞者,事之幹也。又草木莖曰幹。又凡器之本曰幹。榦:《說文》築牆耑木也。《徐曰》別作幹,非。乾:《康熙字典•乙部•十》《唐韻》《集韻》《韻會》《正韻》渠焉切,音虔。易卦名。又《唐韻》古寒切《集韻》《韻會》《正韻》居寒切,音干。燥也。

殘體字造字違反邏輯,例如鸡將「雞」之音符「奚」簡化為「又」, 但汉(漢)的「又」卻非指「奚」,即按鸡的簡化原則,溪應簡化為汉,但事實又非如此。

殘體字引起歧義,令行文要用雙音節及囉唆話語辨義。例如「船只入維港」,究竟解「船隻入維港」抑或「船隻只會進入維多利亞港而不會進入其他港口」呢?又殘體字形難辨,例如鸟马乌驟眼睇都差不多。

香港學生壓力大係因為校內外長年累月評核,如校本評核SBA,全港性系統評估TSA,基本能力評估BCA,功課太多,上堂時間太長,而並非因為正體字筆劃多呀!

其實寫正體字的人,要學粗陋殘體字,非常容易,並不需要由細就寫殘體字,正如以九聲粵語為母語人士,要學四聲普通話,十分容易,根本毋須犧牲母語!況且,如今後生多數電腦打字,筆劃多寡根本無大礙。而且正體漢字,一筆一劃都有邏輯,由細學起,不會太難;不若殘體字亂來,原本就係畀文盲用的。
