Translated by Chapman Chen

Local Studio HK has designed 25 clear and simple infographics with English translation to illustrate to the world differences between Hong Kong and China, including aspects like language (Cantonese vs Putonghua), territory, attitude towards intellectual property, left-hand-drive or right-hand drive vehicle, toilet habit, passport, attitude towards the government, behaviour on trains, food quality, internet tools used, separation of executive, legislative and judicial powers vs co-operation of the three powers, voice volume, etc.

It is not sure whether these charts, which make people smile understandingly, are going to attract the criticism of “hasty generalization” from cultural critics in Hong Kong and China, and again trigger off the debate about the existence of national character. Nonetheless, some of the charts involve self-deriding. For instance, when it comes to public security officers and police officers, the caption reads, “actually, there are no differences.”
