Statement of Condemnation
(Local Press, translated by Chapman Chen)
Mr. Leung Kam-cheung, Chief Editor, Local Press, was arrested by the Hong Kong Police on November 20 for allegedly planning the November 19 attack on the Legislative Council. On November 21, Leung bailed himself out with HK$ 1000. We condemn the Hong Kong Police for abuse of power and making the arrest without any proof.
On November 19, Mr. Leung was carrying out his reporting duty on behalf of our press. Armed with an international press card (see picture), he sent news and photos about the scene to the editorial on the spot. After the arrest, many mass media reported the incident inaccurately and untruthfully. Instead of focusing on the unreasonableness of the arrest made by the police, they made accusations on hearsay and depicted the incident graphically, so much so that one would suspect them of assisting the Hong Kong Government to maintain stability. This is indeed regrettable!
Before this incident, the Hong Kong Police had already imposed restrictions on journalists covering news on the occupied zone. The police even went so far as to chase away international war correspondents from the Mongkok occupied zone, thereby making a fool of themselves in front of the whole world. We urge the Hong Kong Police to respect press freedom and apologize for its abuse of power.
